* 8/20/09 10:10pm Day 47: Acroballet! *

Today was super fun. We didn’t start class until 10am today, because our teacher was at the doctor and we had class for two extra hours yesterday, so it was REALLY nice to sleep in. Me and Joanna woke up earlier than expected though, which just means that our bodies have adjusted to waking up early. BOO, that sucks. Anyways, we only had class for an hour and a half today, so after class we came back to the hotel and studied for a little bit. Actually, we didn’t really study, we just kinda rested on our beds and ate food. It was a good waste of time.

At around 5:30 we left to go to an acrobatics show with our class. It’s more like acroballet, though, because it wasn’t just acrobatics like Cirque de Soleil, but there was also dancing and little stories that the acrobatics were integrated into. I REALLY liked it. It was SOOOO cool. There were some funny parts, some nerve-racking parts, and some gross parts. Funny because the characters in the stories were really cute sometimes, and also because they were so Chinese and did their little Chinese poses at the end of each scene as the curtains closed. Nerve-racking because there were parts that were really risky and I thought they would mess up and the whole scene would be ruined, but it never happened. At one point, they made a tower of girls and chairs that was from the stage floor to the ceiling. So basically one girl was standing on a chair, holding another chair, and then another girl would climb on top of the chair she was holding and hold another chair, and another girl would climb and stand on that chair, and so on. It was like a ridiculously high tower of 8 girls. And then they all did headstands on the chairs. My description completely doesn’t do it justice, though, because the chairs were angled so that they were leaned back, and it wasn’t easy to balance them. Man, that was cool. But it was scary because I was so afraid someone was going to fall and the whole tower would come tumbling down. Anyways, the show was also gross because some of the ways the people’s bodies moved and contorted was nasty. Some of the performers were really young, looked like 12 years old maybe, and they were RIDICULOUSLY flexible. Geneva noted that they were probably training to become gymnasts since the age of 2, and they were the rejects. But they were CRAZY! One boy did a handstand, and then slowly lowered his legs behind his head, so that he formed some sort of an upside down Nike sign. But it was disgusting, because it looked as if he had no spine, so it looked unnervingly unnatural. And then there was a girl who held a lantern on each of her limbs and her head, and she brought them all up to a point, so she was on her stomach with her legs, arms, and head all pointing upward, if you can imagine that. It was nasty; her butt was almost touching her head. Completely unnatural. Watching some of the performers made me flinch and shrug into my seat, because it was just so disgusting to watch. But that was just a small portion of the show. The rest of the show was really entertaining, and those people are super talented. I’m definitely glad I went to see that.
