* 8/13/09 Day 40: Better Days *

It’s been 40 days since I’ve been in China! It’s strange to think that…it seems like it’s been a long time but a short time at the same time. I have 15 more days left!

Today we went to class again…today’s lesson was a lot better than yesterday’s. I don’t know why, but yesterday’s was so complicated and LONG…it was terrible. Today was much better though. The words were easier, and the dialogues were shorter. Plus lots of the words were themed, like 5 words were family members (jie jie, gege, mama, etc) and some more words were colors. So it made it easier to study that way.

After that, me and Joanna ate lunch at some Korean restaurant with our Japanese friend, Hiro (full name: Tetsuhiro Yamasaka). He’s HILARIOUS. I love Japanese people..they’re hilarious. He went to school at UC Riverside too, so his English is good and he understands American humor. It makes it easy to hang out with him. After lunch, I walked to Wanda Plaza (a shopping center about 15 minutes away) to meet Katie (our new resident director) to hang out. She wanted to meet with each of us (Geneva, Joanna, and me) individually to get to know us better. So we went to Starbucks and just talked for about an hour and a half. She’s super fun and easy to talk to, so I like hanging out with her. We talked a lot about my spiritual life and she shared some of her experiences with me, so I think it was really beneficial for me to talk to her. I also shared with her about how I’m getting tired of China and I’m ready to go home. It was nice to vent to her about it, because she understands where I’m coming from since she lives here and feels the same way sometimes.

After that, I came back to the hotel and studied a bit, then Geneva came over and all 3 of us ordered some dinner from a nearby Chinese restaurant. We all ordered some sort of beef cold noodles...it was interesting. I don’t think I’d order it again though. I didn’t like it that much. But it was super cheap..only 9 yuan. Anyways, we ate that while watching Arrested Development (a TV show). We borrowed the DVDs from Katie so that we could finally watch some American shows. I’d never seen Arrested Development before but Joanna said it’s really funny. It’s pretty funny…but not funny enough for me to become addicted to it I think. It’s just a satire about a dysfunctional family, but sometimes I find it more frustrating than funny to watch because the family is just so dumb. Anyways, we watched about 4 episodes and then Chris came over! I feel like I hadn’t seen him in a LONNNGG time, even though it’s really only been 2 weeks. He just hung out with us in the hotel room, talking to us and telling us about his project (he’s doing some sort of electrical engineering project for a competition next month) and catching up with us. It’s super fun hanging out with him…I totally forgot how much I missed him! Hanging out with him made me miss my whole team actually…it’s a different dynamic when we’re all together.

On a different note, Uncle Wu called me today just to check up on me and Joanna. It’s ridiculous how sweet that family is. He doesn’t even speak English, but he wanted to call me just to make sure we were ok. First he asked how we were doing and what we were doing, and I said we are good and we were on our way to do laundry, and then he said (in Chinese), “Okay! I am glad you and Joanna are good…okay bye bye!” Haha so nice :) I like them.

So tired! Need to go to sleep soon…but also need to study. Too much to do!
