*7/13/09 11:26pm Day 9: Chillin’ like a villain… (that was stupid) *

Okay, this is going to be a quick post because I’m tired and I have to wake up at 7am tomorrow.

Today was mostly just hanging out with people again…our entire day was supposed to be devoted to planning for the MMK project (we start tomorrow) but my group finished early. So we met at 8:30am and planned out the rest of our days. Then at 11am, we had a training session on how to use the website eastvillagers.org, so basically Nancy told us what to do and how to use the features on the site. But that was pretty chill, because we met at a coffee shop and I just chatted with Wesley while doing the stuff she told us to do.

After that, though, we were free to do whatever we wanted so some of my team members (Tiffany, Tao, and Nikki) and I hung out. We walked around the student street for a long time..just getting random stuff to eat and buying stuff. First we ate this really good yogurt-flavored ice cream. No, it wasn’t frozen yogurt. It was yogurt-flavored. Yogurt here isn’t like in America…it’s thinner and more like a drink. I usually eat it for breakfast w/ a bao and it has a very distinct flavor. So anyways, we got that yogurt in ice cream form, and it was deeeelicious! After that, we walked around more, looking at random shops around the street. Then, we went to get the bean drink that I loved :) … the one that is milk tea w/ grass jelly, red beans, and green beans. And then we went to a store next to it that sold like bags and stationary stuff and I bought some gifts for my friends. It was so cheap! Only 70 yuan ($10) for all of it, and I got a lot. Anyways, it started getting too hot to be outside, so we went back to Tiffany’s room and played card games for a while.

Then, a bunch of the study abroad students decided to go shopping so we went to People’s Square. It was pretty cool..but I didn’t buy anything. I saw this really cute purple and black dress though, and it was 50% off so it was only 200 yuan (about $28), but I decided not to buy it because I don’t really have room for my luggage and I don’t wear dresses that much..and this was more of a formal dress anyways, and I have quite a few of those. I basically talked myself out of buying it; you should be proud, mom & dad. ANYWAYS, we were shopping for a while…we didn’t go to a whole lot of places I wanted to go to though. I wanted to go to the underground mall like in the metro station, but my group wanted to buy clothes, so we were just upstairs in the mall where you can’t bargain or anything…oh well, hopefully I’ll get to go back there later.

For dinner, I finally had what Shanghai is famous for! I don’t know how to spell it…but I’m going to guess: tsin jian bao. Basically it’s like shao long bao, but bigger and better. It’s like a dumpling but larger, with soup and meat inside. It’s REALLY good, and very fun to eat. When Irene bit into it, she didn’t know that it had soup, so she squirted soup like 10 feet away from her. It was funny, but messy. But anyways, that was amazing, and I want to eat it everyday until I die.

Okay, well, that’s basically all I did and no new revelations in faith or feelings today, so nothing insightful to talk about. Tomorrow we start working with the migrant school kids. We have to meet at 7:30am to take a bus over there, so I have to wake up at 7am. I am so tired….so good night!
